The Charles George VA Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina, is actively recruiting veterans for the national CRAVE trial. This Phase 3 clinical trial aims to investigate whether semaglutide, a GLP-1 drug primarily known for treating diabetes and
aiding weight loss, can be an effective treatment for alcohol use disorder. The Asheville VA is one of 18 sites participating in this study, with six already operational. Dr. Brandon Corbett, a psychiatrist and lead site investigator, noted that the local team launched recruitment approximately two weeks prior after nearly a year of preparation. Researchers are seeking at least 600 veterans nationwide, aged 18 to 80, who have a current diagnosis of alcohol use disorder and wish to reduce their drinking. Participants will receive either semaglutide or a placebo via weekly injections for about six months, along with regular check-ins with the treatment team. The study provides medication, assessments, and visits at no cost, and participants will be compensated for their time and travel. Previous retrospective studies have indicated reduced drinking among individuals taking GLP-1 medications for other conditions, which inspired the CRAVE trial.
