What's Happening?
The Church of England has voted against a proposal to rewild 30% of its land by 2030, a plan that was introduced by Rev Canon Val Plumb. The church, which owns approximately 42,500 hectares of land, currently uses only 3.5% for nature restoration. The decision
has drawn criticism from environmental campaigners who argue that the church is failing to demonstrate moral leadership. Instead of adopting the '30by30' target, the church passed an amendment with less specific commitments to nature restoration.
Why It's Important?
The Church of England's decision not to commit to the '30by30' target is significant as it reflects broader challenges in balancing environmental goals with legal and financial responsibilities. As one of the largest landowners in England, the church's actions could influence other landowners and impact national efforts to meet international environmental commitments. The decision also highlights tensions between economic interests and environmental stewardship, a common theme in global sustainability discussions.
