A study published in the Canada Communicable Disease Report indicates that adults who reported at least two COVID-19 infections were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with new medical conditions compared to those who reported no infections. Researchers
from the Public Health Agency of Canada and Statistics Canada analyzed data from nearly 9,000 respondents to the Canadian COVID-19 Antibody and Health Survey and Follow-up Questionnaire between April 2022 and June 2023. Approximately 47% of participants reported one COVID infection, and 20% reported two or more. The study found that 11% of all participants developed a new medical condition during the study period. Those with two or more infections had 76% higher odds of receiving a new diagnosis. Specifically, repeat infections were associated with five times the odds of a respiratory diagnosis and nearly four times the odds of developing back problems. The study also noted that individuals experiencing acute symptoms that interfered with daily activities during a first infection were 63% more likely to receive a new diagnosis, and those with symptoms lasting three or more months had over three times the odds of a new diagnosis.
