What's Happening?
Marathon County is actively seeking public input on the proposed Hub City Wind Farm through a survey and a public forum. The Alternative Energy Project Local Impact Advisory Committee is gathering feedback to guide negotiations between the county and the project
developer. The proposed wind farm, which may include 28 to 38 turbines, is planned for the towns of Day, McMillan, Eau Pleine, Cleveland, Green Valley, and Brighton. Residents can complete the survey on the Marathon County website until June 19, and a public forum is scheduled for June 17 at the Lake View Conference Center in Wausau. Alliant Energy is considering submitting a permit application to the Wisconsin Public Service Commission by late 2026, with potential construction starting in 2028 or 2029 if approved.
Why It's Important?
The proposed Hub City Wind Farm represents a significant step towards renewable energy development in Marathon County. By seeking public input, the county aims to ensure that the project aligns with community interests and addresses local concerns. The development of wind energy infrastructure could contribute to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy sources. However, it also raises questions about environmental impact, land use, and community acceptance. The feedback collected will be crucial in shaping the project's future and ensuring that it meets both environmental goals and local needs.
What's Next?
Following the collection of public input, the Marathon County Executive Committee will use the feedback to guide negotiations with the project developer. The outcome of these discussions will influence the final proposal submitted to the Wisconsin Public Service Commission. If the project receives approval, construction could begin in 2028 or 2029. Stakeholders, including local residents, environmental groups, and energy companies, will likely continue to engage in discussions about the project's impact and benefits.
