What's Happening?
A new Social Security National Campaign has been launched to target informal sector and self-employed workers. The initiative, organized by the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, the Social Security Fund
(SSF), and the International Labour Organisation (ILO), aims to enhance social security coverage. Minister Rajendra Singh Bhandari emphasized the government's commitment to removing policy barriers to ensure workers' social security. Despite the program's inception in 2075 BS, only a few local levels have implemented it, highlighting the need for broader adoption.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is crucial as it seeks to extend social security benefits to a significant portion of the workforce that is often overlooked. Informal sector workers and the self-employed typically lack access to traditional employment benefits, making them vulnerable to economic instability. By including these workers in social security schemes, the campaign aims to provide them with financial security and support, which is essential for their well-being and economic stability. This initiative also reflects a broader effort to formalize the informal economy and integrate it into the national social security framework.
