What's Happening?
Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has expanded its Filipino Scholars and Interns on Nuclear Engineering (FISSION) program by deploying a new group of engineers overseas. This initiative aims to strengthen
local expertise in nuclear energy. Seven engineers from Meralco and its subsidiary, Meralco PowerGen Corporation, are pursuing advanced studies in nuclear engineering at prestigious institutions in France, Canada, and South Korea. The program, led by the Meralco Power Academy, is designed to cultivate skilled professionals for the Philippines' growing nuclear energy sector. It includes partnerships with international universities to provide access to cutting-edge nuclear laboratories and industry-grade training.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the FISSION program is significant for the Philippines as it supports the country's transition to nuclear energy, a reliable and low-carbon power source. By investing in the education and training of Filipino engineers, Meralco is positioning itself as a leader in the nuclear energy sector. This initiative could enhance the country's energy security and contribute to sustainable development. The program also aligns with Meralco's Nuclear Energy Strategic Transition (NEST) program, which explores nuclear power as a key component of the national energy mix.
What's Next?
The engineers will undertake internships with global nuclear technology firms before returning to the Philippines to apply their training. This experience will be crucial in developing a skilled workforce capable of supporting the country's nuclear energy ambitions. Meralco's continued investment in nuclear education and training may lead to further collaborations with international institutions and advancements in nuclear technology within the Philippines.
