What's Happening?
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has disbursed $188 million to Jordan after the successful completion of the fifth review of the Kingdom's economic reform program under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the second review of the Resilience and Sustainability
Facility (RSF). This financing, equivalent to 137.372 million Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), includes 97.784 million SDRs (approximately $134 million) under the EFF and 39.588 million SDRs (about $54 million) under the RSF. The IMF's Executive Board approved these reviews on June 17, unlocking the additional financing. The IMF noted that Jordan has maintained macroeconomic stability despite regional security tensions, supported by prudent fiscal, monetary, and macroeconomic policies. The government has responded to regional instability by strengthening energy security, facilitating trade, and providing targeted support to affected sectors like tourism and industry.
Why It's Important?
This financial support from the IMF is crucial for Jordan as it continues to navigate economic challenges posed by regional conflicts. The funding will help sustain Jordan's economic reform efforts, which aim to improve the business environment, enhance market competition, and increase labor market flexibility. These reforms are expected to support economic growth and job creation. The IMF's endorsement of Jordan's fiscal and monetary policies underscores the country's commitment to maintaining economic stability. The disbursement also highlights the importance of international financial institutions in supporting countries facing economic pressures due to geopolitical tensions.
What's Next?
Jordan is expected to continue its economic reform agenda, focusing on sustaining macroeconomic stability and addressing the impacts of regional instability. The IMF projects Jordan's economy to grow by 2.7% in 2026, with an acceleration to 3.1% in 2027. The government will likely continue efforts to strengthen energy security, facilitate trade, and support vulnerable sectors. The IMF's ongoing support and monitoring will be crucial in ensuring that Jordan meets its economic targets and continues on a path of sustainable growth.
