What's Happening?
The Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS) in Burlington is organizing its fifth-annual Back to School Bonanza on August 1. The event, which will be held outdoors at COTS's parking lot, aims to provide school supplies, services, and community resources
to students from kindergarten through grade 12. The event is open to any student in need and will take place rain or shine. In addition to school supplies, the event will offer services such as haircuts and access to clothing to help ease first-day-of-school concerns. Entertainment and activities, including performances by DJ Amanda Lee and Vermont Close-Up Magic, will also be part of the event.
Why It's Important?
This event is crucial for supporting families and students who may struggle to afford school supplies and other necessities. By providing these resources, COTS helps ensure that all students have the tools they need to succeed academically, regardless of their financial situation. The event also fosters a sense of community and dignity by allowing students to choose their own supplies and clothing. This initiative highlights the importance of community support and collaboration in addressing educational inequalities and ensuring that all children have equal opportunities to succeed in school.
What's Next?
COTS is seeking additional sponsors and volunteers to support the event, which served approximately 400 family members last year and is expected to reach about 500 this year. Community members can contribute through financial donations or by volunteering. The event's success depends on the continued support of the community and local businesses. As the event date approaches, COTS will continue to coordinate with community partners to ensure a wide range of resources and services are available to attendees.
