What's Happening?
VFW Post 7234 in Ocean View is actively seeking a new van to replace its current 24-year-old, eight-passenger vehicle. The existing van is deemed unreliable and unsafe for transporting the Honor Guard and other VFW members, according to Auxiliary President
Kevin Conlon. The Honor Guard frequently travels to events at Fort Miles, the Delaware Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro, and the Brandywine senior living center, often carrying rifles and flags. Honor Guard Capt. John Gossart emphasized that the current van lacks essential safety features. The post has formed a van committee to research and purchase a new vehicle, and is also looking into acquiring a larger garage to protect the new van from weather conditions. They are appealing for donations from the community and offers from local automobile dealerships to support this initiative.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of a new, safe, and reliable van is crucial for VFW Post 7234 to continue its mission of serving and honoring veterans. The Honor Guard plays a vital role in military funerals and commemorative events, providing solemn tributes to deceased veterans and their families. The current vehicle's unreliability poses a significant challenge to their ability to perform these duties effectively and safely. A new van would ensure that Honor Guard members and their equipment can be transported securely, allowing them to maintain their presence at important veteran-related functions. This effort also highlights the ongoing needs of veteran organizations to secure resources that support their community service and memorial activities, impacting the well-being and recognition of veterans in the region.
What's Next?
VFW Post 7234 will continue its fundraising efforts, accepting donations at the VFW post or via mail. The van committee will proceed with its due diligence in researching suitable vehicles and engaging with local automobile dealerships to secure the best possible deal. Honor Guard Capt. John Gossart is also working with Congresswoman Sarah McBride to explore potential avenues of support. The post aims to acquire a new van by the end of the year. Additionally, the search for a larger garage or protective structure for the new vehicle will continue, ensuring its longevity and readiness for service.
