Yupeng Sun, a 33-year-old Chinese national residing in Andover, has been charged with fraudulent voter registration and fraudulent voting after allegedly impersonating his former roommate, also a Chinese national with legal permanent resident status,
to frame him for illegal voting. According to authorities, Sun submitted an online voter registration in October 2024, followed by an early voting ballot at Malden City Hall for the 2024 U.S. presidential election, all in the victim's name. Subsequently, in April and May 2026, Sun allegedly sent anonymous tips to Homeland Security Investigations and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), falsely claiming the victim had illegally voted and was not a U.S. citizen. Sun also allegedly impersonated the victim and his wife in fraudulent forms submitted to USCIS, requesting to abandon their Legal Permanent Resident (LPR) status. This led to the couple's green cards being confiscated and them being placed into removal proceedings upon returning from an international trip in June 2024. Sun's actions reportedly stemmed from a prior dispute, including an arrest for assault and battery involving the victim's daughter and a claim of unlawful eviction.
