What's Happening?
Central New York representatives, including Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney and Democratic Rep. John Mannion, are backing two legislative proposals aimed at strengthening the U.S. semiconductor manufacturing sector. The Strengthening Essential Manufacturing
and Industrial (SEMI) Investment Act seeks to expand tax credits to encourage domestic production of materials used in manufacturing, extending the Advanced Manufacturing Investment Credit through 2031. The Semiconductor Technology Advancement and Research (STAR) Act proposes expanding tax credits for design and development expenses for U.S.-based companies. These bills aim to close gaps in current tax credits that exclude domestic semiconductor material manufacturers, thereby reducing reliance on foreign production.
Why It's Important?
The proposed legislation is significant as it addresses critical gaps in the U.S. semiconductor supply chain, which has been a point of concern for national security and economic stability. By incentivizing domestic production and development, these bills aim to reduce dependency on foreign suppliers, particularly in light of global supply chain disruptions. Strengthening the semiconductor industry is crucial for maintaining technological leadership and supporting industries reliant on these components. The legislation could lead to increased investment in U.S. manufacturing, job creation, and enhanced competitiveness in the global market.
