What's Happening?
Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSU Denver) has announced that its employees will experience relatively modest health insurance premium increases and minimal changes to benefits for the 2027 plan year. Open Enrollment is scheduled from November
2-20, allowing eligible employees to review and adjust their coverage. Medical premiums will see an overall increase of 5.9%, which is lower than the 9.8% increase in 2026 and significantly below increases reported by other Colorado employers. Employees will contribute an additional $12 to $38 per month, depending on their chosen plan and coverage level, with MSU Denver continuing to cover 75% of medical premiums. The only change to medical coverage is an increase in copayments for certain preventive prescription medications, while dental, vision, life insurance, and disability coverage will remain unchanged with no premium increases.
Why It's Important?
This announcement is significant for MSU Denver employees as it provides clarity and relative stability regarding their healthcare costs and benefits for the upcoming year. In a national landscape where healthcare costs are consistently rising, a modest 5.9% increase in medical premiums is a notable achievement, especially when compared to other local institutions facing much higher increases. This stability can positively impact employee financial planning and overall morale. The university's ability to manage these costs is partly attributed to its participation in the Colorado Higher Education Insurance Benefits Alliance, a consortium that leverages shared purchasing power. This approach helps mitigate the financial burden on both the institution and its employees, ensuring continued access to essential health benefits without drastic cost spikes, which is crucial for employee retention and well-being.
What's Next?
MSU Denver employees are encouraged to actively participate in the Open Enrollment period from November 2-20. While this year's enrollment is passive, meaning current selections will roll over if no action is taken, employees wishing to participate in flexible spending accounts must re-enroll annually. The Total Rewards team will send out emails with detailed plan options, costs, and coverage information. Employees can make changes directly through Workday, with a job aid available for step-by-step guidance. All elections made during this period will become effective on January 1, 2027, and any changes in payroll deductions will be reflected in December paychecks. Employees can also review their Total Rewards Statement in Workday to understand the full value of their compensation and benefits package.
Beyond the Headlines
The relatively stable benefits landscape at MSU Denver, amidst broader national trends of escalating healthcare costs, highlights the effectiveness of collaborative purchasing models like the Colorado Higher Education Insurance Benefits Alliance. This strategy not only benefits the university and its employees but also serves as a potential model for other organizations seeking to control healthcare expenditures. The minimal changes in benefits also reflect a commitment to maintaining comprehensive employee support, which can contribute to a positive work environment and attract talent. In a competitive job market, robust and predictable benefits packages are a key differentiator. This situation also subtly underscores the ongoing challenges in the U.S. healthcare system, where even with strategic alliances, costs continue to rise, albeit at a managed pace for some institutions.
