What's Happening?
George Springer, a professional baseball outfielder and 2017 World Series Champion, has partnered with SAY: The Stuttering Association for the Young as their National Spokesperson. Springer, who has personally
struggled with stuttering, uses his platform to raise awareness and support for children who stutter. He hosts an annual George Springer Bowling Benefit to fund scholarships for Camp SAY, a summer camp dedicated to young people who stutter. Springer openly embraces his stutter, emphasizing that it is a part of his identity, and aims to inspire confidence in children facing similar challenges.
Why It's Important?
Springer's involvement with SAY highlights the importance of addressing speech disorders and supporting affected individuals, particularly children. By leveraging his public profile, Springer brings attention to stuttering, a condition affecting over 70 million people worldwide. His advocacy helps reduce stigma and encourages acceptance, potentially leading to increased support and resources for speech therapy and related programs. This initiative not only benefits children who stutter but also promotes broader societal understanding and inclusivity.
