What's Happening?
The CARICOM Secretariat has conducted a series of webinars aimed at enhancing hurricane preparedness within the agriculture sector. These sessions, part of the Food for Lunch series, were held in collaboration with international and regional organizations
to prepare for the 2026 hurricane season. The webinars emphasized anticipatory actions to protect crops, livestock, and fisheries, and shared disaster recovery experiences and best practices from CARICOM Member States. Dr. Wendell Samuel and Dr. Renata Clarke highlighted the importance of preparedness and collaboration in mitigating the impact of hurricanes on agriculture.
Why It's Important?
The agriculture sector is particularly vulnerable to hurricanes, which can cause significant economic and food security challenges. By focusing on anticipatory actions and sharing best practices, these webinars aim to strengthen the resilience of the agriculture sector against natural disasters. This initiative is crucial for safeguarding livelihoods and ensuring food security in the region, which is frequently affected by hurricanes. The emphasis on collaboration and preparedness can lead to more effective disaster response and recovery efforts, minimizing the long-term impacts on the agriculture sector.
