Smart Communications, Ericsson, and Meta have collaborated to optimize Smart's network in the Philippines, specifically targeting improvements in the quality of voice and video calls on Meta's Messenger app. The enhancements were made in the Luzon area,
focusing on reducing round-trip time by 24.6%, lowering packet loss by 55%, and increasing video bitrate by nearly 20%. These technical adjustments aim to provide users with more stable and reliable real-time conversations. Debbie M. Hu, head of network at Smart Communications, emphasized that these improvements not only benefit Messenger but also enhance the performance of other OTT voice and video call applications. Daniel Ode from Ericsson highlighted the collaboration as a demonstration of global technical expertise and platform-level coordination, resulting in tangible improvements for customers.
Why It's Important?
The network enhancements by Smart Communications, Ericsson, and Meta are significant as they directly impact the user experience for millions of Filipinos who rely on Messenger for communication. By improving call quality, the initiative supports better connectivity and communication, which is crucial in a country where digital communication is a vital part of daily life. The reduction in packet loss and increased video bitrate contribute to clearer audio and video, making conversations more dependable. This development also showcases the importance of international collaboration in leveraging technology to improve telecommunications infrastructure, potentially setting a precedent for similar initiatives in other regions.
