What's Happening?
The demand for mass timber in construction projects has surged, with the number of multifamily, commercial, or institutional projects increasing fivefold over the past seven years. Ironworkers are positioning
themselves as key players in this sector, leveraging their expertise in hoisting, placement, and structural project management. Coby Foust, president of Foust Fab & Erectors, emphasized the suitability of ironworkers for mass timber projects due to their experience with steel erection. The International Association of Bridge, Structural, Ornamental and Reinforcing Iron Workers is actively training its members with mockups of mass timber projects to prepare for this growing demand.
Why It's Important?
The rise in mass timber projects presents significant opportunities for the construction industry, particularly for ironworkers who can apply their skills to this sustainable building material. As the industry faces a skilled labor shortage, ironworkers' readiness to engage with mass timber could help alleviate workforce challenges and support the sector's growth. The collaboration between different trades, such as carpenters and electricians, is crucial for successful project execution, highlighting the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork in modern construction.
What's Next?
Ironworkers are expected to continue expanding their training programs to accommodate the increasing demand for mass timber projects. As more construction firms adopt mass timber, the industry may see a shift towards sustainable building practices, potentially influencing regulations and standards. The collaboration between various trades will likely become more prevalent, fostering innovation and efficiency in project delivery. Stakeholders will be watching how these developments impact the construction landscape and workforce dynamics.
