YouTube has overtaken the BBC in monthly audience reach figures, according to Barb, the UK's official ratings body. In December, YouTube reached 51.9 million viewers, surpassing the BBC's 50.8 million.

The BBC, however, remains ahead in other measures of reach, such as the 15-minute viewing metric, which it argues better reflects traditional TV consumption. The BBC's audience reach was 50 million for TV set viewing, compared to YouTube's 37.5 million.
