GE Aerospace is considering deploying its 747-400 flying testbed equipped with a GE9X engine to the Middle East in early 2026. This initiative aims to replicate airline-like operations and verify the GE9X's performance with recent upgrades. The campaign
will also validate results from dust-ingestion ground tests conducted at GE's site in Peebles, Ohio. The 747 testbed, which rarely travels outside the U.S., would be participating in a pre-entry-into-service campaign for the first time. The GE9X engine, mounted on the testbed, incorporates the latest production-build standard. GE completed initial dust-ingestion tests in 2022, using a talcum powder-like mixture resembling Middle Eastern dust. Further tests are planned for next year to refine the engine design before its entry into service.
