What's Happening?
The UK Royal Air Force (RAF) has deployed Eurofighter Typhoons equipped with Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) laser-guided rockets in the Middle East. This deployment follows a rapid integration and testing campaign aimed at enhancing the Typhoons'
capabilities to counter one-way attack drones. The APKWS system, produced by BAE Systems Inc in the US, modifies unguided 70mm rockets for precision strike duties. The RAF's 9 Squadron, operating from the Akrotiri base in Cyprus, is now using these rockets as part of defensive operations to protect British interests and partners in the region. The system was moved from testing to operational deployment in less than two months, demonstrating its effectiveness in engaging drones at a lower cost compared to traditional missiles.
Why It's Important?
The integration of APKWS rockets into the RAF's Typhoons represents a significant advancement in counter-drone capabilities. This development is crucial as drones pose an increasing threat to military operations and assets. By equipping Typhoons with these precision-guided rockets, the RAF can engage drone threats more effectively and sustainably. The cost-effectiveness of the APKWS system also allows for more frequent use without the financial burden associated with more expensive missile systems. This enhancement not only strengthens the RAF's operational capabilities but also underscores the importance of rapid technological adaptation in modern warfare.
What's Next?
The UK Ministry of Defence has announced plans to commit Typhoons to future international activities, including air patrols to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The addition of the APKWS system will enhance the Typhoons' effectiveness in these missions. As the RAF continues to accumulate flying hours in the region, further integration and testing of new technologies are expected to maintain and enhance operational readiness. The ongoing collaboration with companies like BAE Systems and Qinetiq will likely lead to additional advancements in the RAF's combat capabilities.
