According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of the disease can appear within the first 10 days of exposure and include headaches, muscle aches, and high fever. As the disease progresses, symptoms may include coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and confusion. The NCDHHS reported an increase of over 100 cases between 2024 and 2025. To prevent outbreaks, the department advises regular monitoring and cleaning of water systems, including home water systems, hot tubs, and humidifiers.
