Scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Smithsonian have identified a mysterious 'golden orb' discovered in 2023 in the Gulf of Alaska as a remnant of a giant deep-sea anemone, Relicanthus daphneae. The orb,
found over two miles underwater, initially puzzled researchers due to its lack of recognizable animal features. Through extensive morphological, genetic, and bioinformatics analysis, the orb was determined to be part of the anemone's base that anchored it to the ocean floor. This discovery was made possible by whole-genome sequencing, which revealed genetic similarities to the rarely seen cnidarian species.
