What's Happening?
Mission Ranch Studios, a Bozeman-based media house, has collaborated with Strike Anywhere Films, a New York-based production company, on an advertising film titled 'Earned It.' This nearly two-minute video, produced for Welcome.US, a national immigrant
support nonprofit, depicts the final study steps of a fictional immigrant named 'Ashwin' as he prepares for his U.S. citizenship naturalization test. The film, posted on YouTube in August, coincides with Welcome.US launching a program where American citizens can volunteer to help immigrants study for their naturalization tests online for one hour weekly. The production utilized various Bozeman area locations, including the historic Federal Building, The Westerner, and the Yellowstone River, to evoke an 'Americana' feeling.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration highlights the role of media and local businesses in supporting national initiatives related to immigration and civic integration. The film 'Earned It' aims to humanize the naturalization process, showcasing the dedication required to become a U.S. citizen. By featuring Bozeman's distinctive 'western flair' and natural landscapes, the advertisement connects the immigrant experience with an idealized vision of the U.S., potentially fostering greater empathy and understanding among viewers. The accompanying Welcome.US program, which encourages citizen participation in helping immigrants study, is significant for promoting community engagement and facilitating the integration of new citizens. This initiative can strengthen the fabric of American society by bridging cultural divides and supporting individuals on their path to citizenship.
What's Next?
The 'Earned It' film will continue to be available on YouTube, serving as a public awareness tool for the U.S. citizenship naturalization process and the Welcome.US program. The online study program, which connects American citizens with immigrants preparing for their tests, is expected to gain traction, potentially expanding its reach and impact. The collaboration between Mission Ranch Studios and Strike Anywhere Films could also inspire similar projects that use cinematic storytelling to address social issues. Welcome.US, with its bipartisan support and expanded mission to assist immigrants from various conflicts, will likely continue its efforts to support new arrivals and facilitate their integration into American society, potentially launching more campaigns or programs in the future.
Beyond the Headlines
This project delves into the deeper cultural and societal implications of immigration and citizenship in the U.S. By portraying the naturalization test as a journey of learning and integration, the film challenges simplistic narratives about immigration. It emphasizes the value of civic knowledge and the active participation of both immigrants and existing citizens in the process of nation-building. The use of 'Americana' imagery from Bozeman suggests an attempt to connect new citizens with a sense of shared national identity and heritage. This initiative also subtly addresses the ethical dimension of welcoming and supporting newcomers, framing it as a collective responsibility. The project's focus on human connection through the study buddy program underscores the importance of personal interaction in fostering successful integration and mutual understanding within a diverse society.
