What's Happening?
The International Chamber of Commerce Bangladesh (ICCB) has urged India to expedite the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to address the trade imbalance between the two countries. During a meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh,
Dinesh Trivedi, ICCB President Mahbubur Rahman emphasized the need for India to improve market access for Bangladeshi products and reduce non-tariff barriers. The bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India is significant, with Bangladesh exporting $1.76 billion and importing $9.62 billion in the fiscal year 2024-25. The ICCB also highlighted the importance of private sector engagement and regional cooperation through initiatives like the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
Why It's Important?
The call for easing trade barriers and expediting CEPA is crucial for balancing the trade relationship between Bangladesh and India, which is currently skewed in favor of India. By addressing these issues, both countries can enhance economic collaboration, leading to sustainable development and growth. The private sector's role is pivotal in driving economic growth, investment, and employment, which are essential for a stable economy. Strengthening regional cooperation through SAARC and BIMSTEC can also reduce logistics costs and enhance supply chains, benefiting both nations economically.
What's Next?
The next steps involve continued dialogue and engagement at the highest political levels to resolve longstanding bilateral issues. The Indian High Commission has expressed its commitment to supporting the business community, encouraging Bangladeshi entrepreneurs to engage with the mission for expanding trade and investment. There is also potential for establishing joint venture industries in border areas, which could attract investment and generate employment. Further improvements in business visa issuance are also anticipated to facilitate commercial engagement.
