What's Happening?
Savannah Resources PLC has announced the purchase of the first piece of capital equipment for its Barroso Lithium Project in Portugal. This marks a significant milestone in the development of Europe's largest spodumene lithium deposit. The company is progressing
with its Definitive Feasibility Study (DFS), expected to be completed by July. Savannah is also advancing its environmental licensing process, with plans to submit its RECAPE compliance study by Q4 2026. The company has engaged COBA, a Portuguese engineering firm, to enhance its water infrastructure plans. Despite an extended timeline for environmental licensing, Savannah aims to maintain its target for first production by 2028.
Why It's Important?
The Barroso Lithium Project is crucial for Europe's strategic raw materials supply, particularly in the context of the European Critical Raw Materials Act. As the demand for lithium grows, driven by the electric vehicle and renewable energy sectors, projects like Barroso are vital for reducing Europe's dependency on external sources. Savannah's progress reflects the broader push towards securing local supply chains for critical materials. The project's advancement also highlights the importance of balancing environmental considerations with industrial development, as seen in the extended timeline for environmental licensing.
What's Next?
Savannah will continue its technical workstreams and prepare for the geotechnical campaign. The company plans to select an engineering contractor for the FEED study soon, with work expected to begin in June. The environmental licensing process will proceed with the RECAPE submission in Q4 2026, and a decision is anticipated by February 2027. Savannah will manage the impact of the extended timeline on other project aspects, including financing, to ensure the 2028 production target is met.
