What's Happening?
The Tennessee Titans have traded cornerback Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a draft pick upgrade, moving from a sixth-round to a fifth-round pick. This marks the second defensive
player the Titans have traded this season, following the earlier trade of cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. The team is facing significant depth issues at the cornerback position due to these trades and other injuries. With L'Jarius Sneed on injured reserve and Darrell Baker Jr. being evaluated for a concussion, the Titans are left with a depleted roster. The only cornerbacks currently available for their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers are rookie Marcus Harris and two players recently added off waivers, Jalyn Armour-Davis and Samuel Womack III.
Why It's Important?
The trade of Roger McCreary highlights the Titans' strategy to potentially rebuild by acquiring more draft picks, which aligns with their general manager Mike Borgonzi's focus on draft and development. However, this approach has left the team vulnerable in the short term, particularly in the cornerback position, which is notoriously difficult to fill. The Titans' current 1-7 record suggests a challenging season, and the lack of depth could impact their performance in upcoming games. This situation presents an opportunity for lesser-known players to step up, but it also poses a risk of further weakening the team's defense.
What's Next?
As the trade deadline approaches on November 4, the Titans may continue to make moves to acquire more draft picks. The coaching staff, led by interim coach Mike McCoy, will need to strategize on how to best utilize the remaining players and possibly adjust their defensive schemes to compensate for the lack of experienced cornerbacks. The team's performance in the upcoming game against the Chargers will be crucial in determining their ability to adapt to these changes.
