What's Happening?
International Car Operators (ICO), part of Japan's NYK Group, has commenced operations at Belgium's first shore power facility for roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) vessels at the port of Zeebrugge. This facility allows vessels to connect to shore power, enabling
them to turn off onboard generators and reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter. The facility, which can currently supply electricity to one vessel at a time, uses renewable energy generated from ICO's on-site wind farm. The project, supported by the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, is part of a broader sustainability initiative at the terminal, which includes electric vehicle charging stations and solar panels.
Why It's Important?
The launch of this shore power facility is a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of maritime operations. By allowing vessels to use shore power, the facility helps decrease emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a reduction in the port's carbon footprint. This initiative aligns with global efforts to make the shipping industry more sustainable and prepares the port for future low-emission vessels. The project also highlights the role of renewable energy in supporting industrial operations, showcasing a model that could be replicated in other ports worldwide.
