What's Happening?
Victoria has commenced its 51st annual Greater Victoria Flower Count, a community event that celebrates the city's floral abundance. Running from March 4 to 11, the event encourages residents to tally blooms, with titles awarded for the 'bloomingest community'
and 'bloomingest classroom.' In 2025, Victoria recorded 44 billion blooms. Simultaneously, the city faces budget cuts to its hanging basket program, reducing it by half for 2026. To counter this, a Hanging Basket Donation Program has been launched, aiming to raise $130,000 to restore the program. Contributions have been made by Butchart Gardens and local organizations.
Why It's Important?
The flower count and hanging basket program are key to Victoria's identity and tourism appeal. The budget cuts highlight financial constraints, prompting community-driven solutions to preserve these traditions. The donation program not only seeks to maintain the city's aesthetic but also strengthens community ties and civic pride. Successful fundraising and community participation can enhance Victoria's image as a tourist destination, benefiting local businesses and the economy.
What's Next?
The success of the Hanging Basket Donation Program will determine the extent of the hanging basket displays in 2026. Community engagement and fundraising efforts are critical to reaching the financial target. The results of the flower count will be announced post-March 11, potentially influencing future tourism and community initiatives. The city may consider additional partnerships or funding strategies to support its horticultural projects, ensuring Victoria remains a vibrant and attractive city.
