What's Happening?
Despite repeated recommendations from the Indian federal government since 2018, Maharashtra has yet to establish a Directorate of Agricultural Engineering. This directorate is intended to boost farm mechanization and double farmers' income. Former Union
Minister Parshottam Rupala initially urged the creation of agricultural engineering posts in every district. Subsequent appeals were made to various Chief Ministers, but no action has been taken. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Agriculture also recommended such directorates to increase mechanization to 75% by 2047. The need for a dedicated state-level mechanism is emphasized with the increasing use of drones, AI, and robotics in farming.
Why It's Important?
The delay in establishing the Directorate of Agricultural Engineering in Maharashtra highlights challenges in implementing federal recommendations at the state level. This situation underscores the potential impact on agricultural productivity and income for farmers in the region. The lack of progress may hinder efforts to modernize agriculture through mechanization, which is crucial for improving efficiency and sustainability in farming practices. The situation also reflects broader issues of governance and coordination between federal and state governments in India.
