What's Happening?
The University of Wolverhampton is organizing a sound system music event to raise funds for those affected by Hurricane Melissa. The category five storm recently devastated Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba, resulting
in over 30 deaths and widespread destruction. The event, named Dub City, is scheduled for November 28 at the university's city campus. Profits from the event will be directed to the Government of Jamaica's relief fund. Additionally, barrels have been placed around the student union to collect non-perishable food and bedding for donation. The event is inspired by the Jamaican sound system culture, a tradition brought to Wolverhampton by the Windrush generation.
Why It's Important?
The fundraiser highlights the ongoing need for international support in the wake of natural disasters. Hurricane Melissa's impact on Caribbean nations underscores the vulnerability of these regions to severe weather events. By organizing this event, the University of Wolverhampton is contributing to relief efforts and fostering community engagement. The initiative also serves as a cultural celebration, preserving the legacy of Jamaican sound system culture in the UK. This effort not only aids those in immediate need but also strengthens cultural ties and awareness within the local community.
