What's Happening?
The East Carolina University (ECU) Marching Pirates have been selected to perform in the 101st Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2027. This marks the first time in the organization's 88-year history that the band will participate in the iconic New York
City event. Macy's chose ECU on its initial application, a competitive process involving approximately 100 high school and collegiate bands. The announcement was made to the band members by drum major Gracie Orange, followed by congratulations from Chancellor Philip Rogers. Marching Pirates director Dr. Joe Busuito expressed his long-standing goal of achieving this milestone for the program. ECU's Marching Pirates are the tenth band to receive an invitation for the 2027 parade and will be the only band from North Carolina. This selection highlights the band's growth, which has seen a 30% increase in membership over the last five years, reaching 220 members in 2025. The band draws students from over 40 undergraduate disciplines.
Why It's Important?
The selection of the ECU Marching Pirates for the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is a significant achievement that will provide unparalleled national exposure for East Carolina University and the state of North Carolina. The parade is viewed by over 30 million television viewers and 3.5 million spectators in New York City, offering a massive platform to showcase the university's talent and spirit. This exposure can enhance ECU's reputation, potentially attracting more prospective students and increasing alumni engagement. For the band members, it represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that will be a highlight of their collegiate experience and a source of immense pride. The event also serves as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the students and faculty, particularly Dr. Joe Busuito, who made this a key goal. The performance will not only celebrate the Marching Pirates' musical excellence but also represent the broader community of eastern North Carolina on a national stage.
What's Next?
Following the invitation, the ECU Marching Pirates face a year of intensive preparations for their 2027 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade performance. This includes rehearsing the performance along the parade route and at Herald Square. A significant undertaking will be fundraising, with an aim to raise $500,000 to cover the week-long trip for 300 people and their instruments. Macy's has provided a $10,000 kick-off donation to support these efforts. The university and band leadership will be actively seeking contributions from the community and alumni. The Marching Pirates' director, Dr. Joe Busuito, emphasized the importance of community support for this endeavor. The band's participation will culminate in their performance on Thanksgiving Day 2027, where they will be seen by millions nationwide.
