What's Happening?
The Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro, Aleksa Bečić, and the Minister of Defense, Dragan Krapović, visited the KERSHIP shipyard in Lanester, France, to assess the progress of Montenegro's new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs). This visit marks a significant
milestone in the construction of the OPV 60M vessels, with the first ship, PETAR I, scheduled for delivery in April 2027. The visit included a tour of the shipyard, where the officials were briefed on the integration of main equipment and upcoming industrial milestones. The construction of these vessels represents Montenegro's second-largest defense investment since its independence in 2006, aimed at modernizing its naval capabilities and enhancing its contribution to NATO forces.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of the OPV 60M vessels is a strategic move for Montenegro, reflecting its commitment to strengthening national defense and aligning with NATO standards. This investment is crucial for Montenegro as it prepares for potential European Union accession in 2028, enhancing its geopolitical standing and operational capabilities in the Adriatic and Mediterranean regions. The development of these vessels not only boosts Montenegro's defense infrastructure but also signifies its growing role in regional security. The collaboration with KERSHIP and the French Defense Procurement Agency highlights international cooperation in defense technology and capability building.
