What's Happening?
The U.S.-India NISAR satellite has commenced the public release of its data, providing researchers with access to advanced radar Earth-observation capabilities. The satellite, a joint mission between NASA and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO),
features both L-band and S-band radar systems, making it the first free-flying satellite to operate these instruments together. The mission aims to scan nearly all of Earth's land and ice surfaces every 12 days, generating extensive scientific data. The release follows months of calibration after the satellite's launch on July 30, 2025. An early image from the satellite, resembling a hummingbird, highlights the mission's ability to capture detailed radar imagery that optical satellites cannot, such as penetrating snow and ice.
