Astronomers at the University of Warwick have utilized a new artificial intelligence system to confirm the existence of more than 100 exoplanets, including 31 newly identified worlds. This breakthrough was achieved by applying the AI tool to data from
NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), which monitors the sky for slight dips in starlight caused by planets crossing in front of their host stars. The research, published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS), involved analyzing observations from over 2.2 million stars collected during TESS's first four years. The focus was on planets with short orbital periods, completing a full orbit in less than 16 days. The study identified several rare and extreme planet types, such as ultra-short-period planets and those in the 'Neptunian desert,' a region where few planets are expected to exist.
