What's Happening?
The Government of Pakistan has approved a process for the auction of 600MHz of spectrum, aiming to improve internet services and facilitate the launch of 5G technology. This decision was made by the Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet, with
the auction expected to be completed by early February. The spectrum auction is intended to address internet congestion and support Pakistan's digital transformation efforts. The auction will offer 606MHz of new spectrum across six major bands, including 700MHz, 1800MHz, 2100MHz, 2300MHz, 2600MHz, and 3500MHz, with the latter two bands being particularly suited for 5G services. The urgency of the auction is driven by the need to enhance connectivity, as Pakistan's population has had access to only 274MHz of spectrum compared to 600MHz available in neighboring Bangladesh.
