What's Happening?
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has introduced its 2026 North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, effective April 1. These criteria are used by certified commercial motor vehicle enforcement personnel across North America to determine
whether drivers or vehicles should be placed out of service. The updated criteria include 17 changes approved by alliance voting members last year, affecting inspection bulletins, procedures, operational policies, and training materials. Key updates involve revisions to license and CDL sections, alcohol possession rules, ELD-related violations, brake system criteria, cargo securement, coupling device criteria, wheel and rim criteria, passenger vehicle requirements, placarding rules, and the addition of a chart outlining federal out-of-service orders. The updated criteria are available in multiple formats, including print, electronic, and mobile app versions, and a webinar outlining the changes is accessible to CVSA members.
Why It's Important?
The implementation of the updated out-of-service criteria by CVSA is crucial for maintaining safety and compliance in the commercial vehicle sector. These changes aim to address evolving safety concerns and regulatory requirements, ensuring that enforcement personnel have clear guidelines to follow. By refining criteria related to licenses, alcohol possession, electronic logging devices, and other critical areas, CVSA enhances the ability to identify and mitigate risks associated with commercial vehicle operations. This is particularly important for preventing accidents and ensuring the safe transport of goods across North America. The updates also reflect a commitment to aligning with federal standards, which can improve consistency in enforcement and reduce confusion among drivers and operators.
