The Waukegan Polar Bear Plunge, held on New Year’s Day at the Waukegan Municipal Beach, saw a record turnout with 615 participants braving the frigid waters of Lake Michigan. Despite temperatures of 14
degrees and a windchill near zero, the event was a success, raising over $20,000 for Special Recreation Services of Northern Lake County. The plunge, now in its 27th year, surpassed the previous record of 540 participants set in 2024. The event faced challenges due to icy beach conditions caused by prior rain and snow, but city personnel worked to ensure safety. Participants, including first-timers and veterans, expressed feelings of refreshment and gratification.
