What's Happening?
A new study published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health indicates that between 402 and 433 million cases of acute pesticide poisoning occur annually among farmers and farmworkers worldwide. This represents approximately 46% of the global farming
population of 934 million. Despite two decades of international efforts to reduce pesticide use, global annual consumption has doubled since 1990, reaching 3.8 million tonnes in 2023. The hardest-hit regions are Southern Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Africa, with Burkina Faso reporting the highest national rate of nearly 84% of farmers poisoned each year. Europe is the only major region to see a decrease in pesticide consumption, attributed to strict regulatory efforts, though non-fatal poisoning remains a significant issue, particularly in Southern Europe.
