What's Happening?
In Benton Harbor, Michigan, a significant redevelopment project known as 'Project T' is underway, transforming the former site of Mercy Hospital into 77 workforce housing units. The hospital, which was
vacated in 1986 and demolished in 2016, is being repurposed through a $27 million initiative funded by a public-private partnership. Key partners include the Whirlpool Foundation, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, Renovare Development, and Habitat for Humanity. The project is being executed in three phases, with Phase 1 expected to be completed by next August. This phase will feature 14 duplex buildings, providing 28 two- and three-bedroom homes for individuals and families earning between 60% and 120% of the Area Median Income. Subsequent phases will add more housing units and a childcare facility, targeting a broader range of income levels.
