What's Happening?
Michelle Adepoju, founder and creative director of Kilentar, unveiled the brand's Lagos Spring 2026 collection titled 'Sùrùlérè,' meaning 'patience is rewarding' in Yoruba. The collection was presented
in an intimate setting at luxury retailer Temple Muse, featuring 10 models showcasing hand-beaded garments and handwoven traditional textiles. Adepoju focused on creating a smaller, curated collection to avoid overproduction and waste, a common issue in the fashion industry. The collection includes standout pieces like a yellow Akwete corset dress and a multi-toned beaded V-neck top.
Why It's Important?
Kilentar's approach to the Spring 2026 collection underscores a growing trend in the fashion industry towards sustainability and mindful production. By prioritizing quality over quantity, Adepoju challenges the fast fashion model and highlights the value of traditional craftsmanship. This shift can influence other designers and brands to adopt similar practices, potentially reducing waste and promoting sustainable fashion. The collection's emphasis on cultural heritage also contributes to the preservation and appreciation of traditional techniques in modern fashion.
