What's Happening?
The global publishing industry is seeing a significant push towards expanding the reach of translated literature through two major initiatives: a grant program and a literary award. The PEN Presents x SALT initiative, a collaboration between English PEN and the South
Asian Literature in Translation project, is currently accepting submissions until May 31, 2026. This program aims to support translators by providing grants to create sample translations, thereby increasing the availability of literature from underrepresented languages and regions. Additionally, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, celebrating its 20th anniversary, continues to promote Arabic literature and culture globally. This award, organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre, has supported the translation of numerous titles into various languages, furthering the international presence of Arabic literary works.
Why It's Important?
These initiatives are crucial in diversifying the literary landscape by making works from underrepresented regions and languages more accessible to a global audience. The PEN Presents x SALT program not only supports translators financially but also encourages the publication of works that might otherwise remain unknown outside their native regions. Similarly, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award plays a pivotal role in promoting Arabic literature, thereby fostering cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. By supporting these translations, both programs contribute to a richer, more inclusive global literary culture, offering readers worldwide access to diverse narratives and perspectives.
What's Next?
As the submission deadlines approach, translators and authors are encouraged to participate in these programs to gain recognition and support for their work. The PEN Presents x SALT initiative will soon shortlist applicants, providing them with grants to develop their translations further. Meanwhile, the Sheikh Zayed Book Award continues to invite submissions, aiming to celebrate and promote Arabic literature on an international scale. These efforts are expected to lead to increased publication opportunities for translated works, thereby enhancing the global literary dialogue.
