What's Happening?
The University of Portsmouth has embarked on a digital transformation project aimed at modernizing its infrastructure by replacing its legacy systems. This initiative, supported by Valorem Reply, a Microsoft Cloud Solutions Partner, has successfully reduced
integration times from 18 months to between six and eight weeks. The university's digital infrastructure, which supports over 24,500 students and 4,600 staff, consists of more than 200 applications. The project has already deployed nine production integrations across 28 interfaces, with 24 functional and non-functional deployments completed. Despite challenges in organizational culture and skills transition, the project is ongoing, with 40 more integrations planned. The transformation emphasizes the importance of empowering teams and building internal capabilities.
Why It's Important?
This transformation is crucial as it enhances the university's ability to respond to changing needs and leverage integrated data across its complex application landscape. By moving away from costly, under-utilized legacy systems, the university not only improves efficiency but also reduces costs. The project highlights the broader trend of educational institutions adopting digital solutions to improve service delivery and operational efficiency. This shift is significant for the education sector, which increasingly relies on robust digital infrastructures to support learning and administrative functions. The success of this project could serve as a model for other institutions facing similar challenges.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, the University of Portsmouth plans to develop 40 additional production integrations. This continued development will further enhance the university's digital capabilities, allowing for more responsive and efficient service delivery. The focus will remain on empowering teams and building knowledge to sustain the transformation. Stakeholders, including students and staff, are likely to benefit from improved access to integrated services and data. The university's experience may also influence other educational institutions considering similar digital transformations.
