What's Happening?
South Africa's Biovac has secured a $15 million loan from the African Development Bank to establish Africa's first end-to-end cholera vaccine manufacturing plant in Cape Town. The facility, expected to be operational by 2028, will initially produce oral
cholera vaccines and later expand to include vaccines for polio, pneumonia, and meningitis. This project aims to reduce Africa's dependency on imported vaccines by enabling local production. The plant will have the capacity to produce 30 to 40 million doses annually, significantly contributing to the continent's vaccine supply.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of an end-to-end vaccine manufacturing facility in Africa is a significant step towards reducing the continent's reliance on imported vaccines, which became evident during the COVID-19 pandemic. By producing vaccines locally, Africa can better manage supply disruptions and ensure timely access to essential vaccines. This initiative also supports the African Union's goal of manufacturing 60% of the continent's vaccine needs locally by 2040. Additionally, the project is expected to create jobs and enhance technical capacity in vaccine production, contributing to economic growth and public health resilience.
