CABI Consultation Addresses Agricultural and Environmental Challenges in Americas and Caribbean

What's Happening?

CABI held a Regional Consultation Meeting in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, from September 16-18, 2025, focusing on agricultural and environmental challenges in the Americas and Caribbean. The event was attended by representatives from 11 Member Countries, partner organizations, and subject-matter experts. The consultation aimed to review progress and discuss future priorities under CABI's global strategy, which was first agreed upon in 2022. Key discussions included the importance of partnerships in addressing global challenges such as hunger, poverty, gender inequality, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The event highlighted the role of science-based, innovative solutions in achieving food and nutrition security, emphasizing sustainable production, pest threat anticipation, and improved market access for farmers.

Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries plans to introduce Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) testing using newly acquired equipment, aiming to improve food safety standards and support sustainable farming practices. Additionally, CABI's ongoing initiatives, such as biological control measures against pests like the Moruga Locust and the Pink Hibiscus Mealy Bug, will continue to play a crucial role in addressing agricultural threats. The consultation reaffirmed CABI's commitment to promoting science-based, collaborative approaches to strengthen food systems and support sustainable agriculture across the Americas and Caribbean.
