A recent YouGov poll conducted across six major European nations—France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK—reveals a significant public preference for increased air conditioning adoption over prioritizing carbon emission reductions. Following
four extreme heatwaves that resulted in thousands of excess deaths, between 30% and 52% of respondents expressed fear for their household's health in temperatures at or above 40°C (104°F). A substantial portion, ranging from 27% in Spain to 53% in Germany, reported an inability to keep their homes adequately cool. The survey, conducted in mid-July and early August, found that 61% to 73% of respondents support installing air conditioning as standard in all new homes. Furthermore, 65% to 75% backed easing restrictions for installing air conditioning, and 52% to 66% supported government subsidies for homeowners. In all countries except Italy, 41% to 48% of people prioritized encouraging air conditioning to mitigate heatwave harms over lowering CO2 emissions, compared to 20% to 33% who held the reverse view. Air conditioning is considerably less common in Europe than in the U.S., where 93% of people have a system, with European take-up rates ranging from 11% in the UK to 63% in Italy.
