A new law in Kansas, signed by Governor Laura Kelly, aims to alleviate student loan debt for law students willing to serve in rural areas. The legislation, known as Sub for HB 2595, offers a stipend of up to $3,000 per school year for up to three years
to students participating in the Law Student Training and Stipend Program. In return, these students must commit to practicing law in a rural area for at least one year per year of stipend received. Additionally, the Attorney Training and Loan Repayment Program for Rural Kansas provides up to $20,000 per year in loan repayment for attorneys who live and work in qualifying rural areas for up to five years. This initiative addresses the shortage of legal professionals in rural Kansas, where only 20% of the state's lawyers serve despite half the population residing there.
