The Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission (NIRPC) has partnered with the Fort Wayne Housing Authority to participate in the Hoosier Homes Homebuyer Assistance Program. This initiative aims
to make home buying more accessible in Northwest Indiana by offering up to 5% down payment assistance to buyers whose incomes are up to 140% of the area's median income. The program is administered by the Fort Wayne Housing Authority and funded through Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and other agencies, with no cost to NIRPC. Valparaiso Councilman Robert Cotton, a key advocate for this move, highlighted the changing housing market dynamics, where builders focus on high-end homes, potentially marginalizing middle-income buyers. The program targets individuals earning between 60% and 140% of the median income, addressing a significant portion of the population in areas like Valparaiso.
