The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a health advisory regarding a nationwide increase in rabies exposures. From July through August, the agency observed a 17% rise in rabies-related inquiries compared to the same period
last year. This surge includes reports of mass exposure events, such as one in North Carolina where nearly 300 individuals were exposed to rabid baby goats from a mobile petting zoo. Several state health departments have also reported local increases in human rabies exposures involving known rabies vectors or animals where rabies is less commonly reported. Consequently, the utilization of rabies vaccines and immunoglobulins has significantly increased this year, with a 33% rise in vaccine use and a 76% rise in immunoglobulin use as of September 2, compared to the previous year. The CDC emphasizes that rabies is a nearly 100% fatal zoonotic viral disease, but it is preventable with appropriate post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) administered before symptoms appear.
