What's Happening?
Representative Tony Wied (WI-08) recently participated in the 2026 Bakers Fly-In and Policy Summit in Washington, D.C. This event, hosted by the American Bakers Association (ABA) in partnership with the Retail Bakers of America (RBA) and the American Society
of Baking (ASB), brought together 100 baking industry leaders to meet with approximately 100 congressional offices. The purpose of these meetings was to discuss policy issues critical to the future of the baking industry and to promote the 'Baking Feeds America' advocacy campaign. Representative Wied was among several policymakers, including Acting Commissioner of Food and Drugs Kyle Diamantas and Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski (IL-13), who engaged with industry representatives. The discussions highlighted how the baking industry contributes to feeding families, creating jobs, supporting communities, and bolstering the national economy. The campaign also emphasized the nutritional value of baked goods, noting that enriched and whole grain breads are important sources of fiber, iron, magnesium, and B vitamins, and are found in nearly 99% of American households.
Why It's Important?
The engagement of Representative Wied and other policymakers with the baking industry is important for several reasons. The baking industry is a significant contributor to the U.S. economy, generating billions of dollars and supporting numerous jobs. Direct advocacy efforts, such as the Bakers Fly-In, allow industry leaders to communicate their priorities and concerns directly to lawmakers, influencing potential legislation and regulatory decisions. This interaction helps ensure that the unique challenges and needs of both commercial and retail bakeries are understood at the federal level. For instance, retail bakeries, often small businesses, play a vital role in local economies and serve as community gathering places. By sharing these stories, the industry aims to secure policies that foster growth, address labor issues, and ensure food safety standards are practical and effective. The 'Baking Feeds America' campaign also underscores the industry's role in public health by promoting the nutritional benefits of baked goods, which can impact dietary guidelines and consumer perceptions.
What's Next?
Following the Bakers Fly-In and Policy Summit, the insights and concerns raised by baking industry leaders will likely inform future legislative discussions and regulatory considerations in Congress and relevant federal agencies. The ongoing 'Baking Feeds America' campaign will continue to amplify the industry's message through various channels, including advertisements and direct outreach to congressional offices. The Food Technical and Regulatory Affairs Professionals Group (FTRAC) Professionals Group Conference, which concluded the week, will further examine regulatory, food safety, and nutrition issues, providing ongoing data and insights to policymakers. Additionally, the ABA's NextGenBaker Leadership Forum, which convened concurrently, focused on leadership development and advocacy experience for emerging leaders, suggesting a sustained effort to cultivate future industry advocates. The upcoming 2027 ABA Convention will also feature discussions on navigating uncertainty and making informed decisions, indicating a continuous strategic approach to industry challenges.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate policy discussions, the Bakers Fly-In highlights the broader trend of industry-specific advocacy in shaping national policy. The baking industry's proactive engagement with policymakers underscores the importance of direct communication in a complex regulatory environment. This approach allows for a nuanced understanding of how federal policies, from food safety regulations to labor laws, impact specific sectors of the economy. The emphasis on the nutritional value of baked goods also reflects a strategic effort to counter negative perceptions often associated with processed foods, aligning industry interests with public health narratives. Furthermore, the involvement of emerging leaders through the NextGenBaker Leadership Forum indicates a long-term strategy for sustained influence, ensuring that future generations of industry professionals are equipped to engage in policy advocacy. This model of direct engagement and strategic communication is crucial for industries seeking to navigate evolving economic and regulatory landscapes.
