What's Happening?
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the US Air Force have collaborated to modify F-16 fighter jets for autonomous flight under the Viper Experimentation and Next-generation Operations Model (VENOM) program. This initiative involves
equipping F-16s with a kit that allows pilots to switch between traditional and AI-controlled flight modes. The VENOM project builds on previous autonomous flight technology developed with the X-62 VISTA, a modified F-16 used for testing AI combat skills. The program aims to enhance the capabilities of AI in aerial combat, with several F-16s already participating in live-flight scenarios at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
