What's Happening?
After a six-month negotiation period, Niles village leaders and Pace have reached an agreement to resume the free bus service in the community. The service was previously suspended due to a lapse in insurance coverage. Under the new two-year contract,
Pace will provide 10 ADA-compliant, 15-passenger vehicles, while the village of Niles will maintain an insurance transit policy. Pace has agreed to reimburse the village for the insurance premium cost up to $10,130 for the 2026 plan. Additionally, Pace will cover service costs from June 2024 to September 2025, when the contract had lapsed. The total program cost is approximately $1.7 million, with the village contributing about $622,000. The service is expected to resume by the end of March, with drivers undergoing retraining.
Why It's Important?
The resumption of the free bus service is significant for the residents of Niles, as it provides essential transportation options, particularly for those who rely on public transit for daily commutes. The agreement also highlights the importance of collaboration between local government and transit authorities to ensure community needs are met. The financial arrangement, including the reimbursement of insurance costs, reflects a commitment to maintaining public services without imposing additional financial burdens on the village. This development may also influence public opinion ahead of a March 17 referendum, where voters will decide on the continuation of the free bus service at an annual cost of approximately $650,000.
What's Next?
As the service is set to resume, village officials are working on collecting ridership data and reviewing bus routes to enhance efficiency. There is a possibility of adjusting routes to avoid overlap with paid services, potentially introducing new routes. The upcoming referendum will be a critical moment for the community, as it will determine the future of the free bus service. The outcome could influence future negotiations and funding allocations for public transportation in Niles.
